Patient demographic data from the national CHI dataset.

Demographic data comes from the national CHI dataset, however only Tayside and Fife health boards can be extracted for HIC projects. Therefore the demography dataset contains a single record for each cohort, this record will be details for the most recent time the person was in either Tayside or Fife.  

This is the current or most recent record for each person, aiming for a single record per person.

PROCHI

Patient demographic data. Demographic data comes from the national CHI dataset, however only Tayside and Fife healthboards can be extracted for HIC projects. Therefore the demography dataset contains a single record for each cohort, this record will be details for the most recent time the person was in either Tayside or Fife.  If there are PROCHIs in your cohort that do not appear in demography then it is because that person has never lived in Tayside or Fife (according to CHI).    This is the current or most recent record for each person, aiming for a single record per person.    For longitudinal demographics data (e.g. if you want to be able to track multiple residential periods within Tayside, i.e. entering and leaving then entering again), use the demography_healthboard_residence or demography_longitudinal.

Demography

This field represents patient Gender.  M (Male) or F (Female).   It can be derived from the CHI number although it is contained within the monthly CHI snapshot table received from the health board.  .

Anonymised date of birth to within three months of original data (e.g., 22/03/2008 would be anonymised to 01/02/2008.  It is generated internally by HIC).  .

anon_date_of_birth

This field represents the patients current calculated age based on their date of birth.  Age is calculated at date of extraction (listed in the meta data) OR date of death if the person is deceased..

Calculated_Age

This field represents the date when a person came into the health board region and registered with that health board GP.   .

date_in

This field represents the date when a person left his or her health board (to register with a different health board GP).   This will be NULL for those people who have not left the health board area.  .

date_out

This field represents the alpha and/or numeric Health Board code in which the patient CHI information was extracted from. .

hb_extract

This field represents the Health Board Quintile (SIMD - scottish index of multiple deprivation). Identified based on patient's full postcode (SIMD values downloaded from   http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/SIMD);  1 = most deprived, 5 = most affluent.  .

HBSIMD5

This field represents the Health Board Decile (SIMD - scottish index of multiple deprivation) . Identified based on patient's full postcode (SIMD values downloaded from http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/SIMD) 1 = most deprived, 10 = most affluent.  .

HBSIMD10

This field represents the Scotland Quintile (SIMD - scottish index of multiple deprivation). Identified based on patient's full postcode (SIMD values downloaded from http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/SIMD);  1 = most deprived, 5 = most affluent.  .

SCSIMD5

This field represents the Scotland Decile (SIMD - scottish index of multiple deprivation) . Identified based on patient's full postcode (SIMD values downloaded from  http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/SIMD) ; 1 = most deprived, 10 = most affluent.  .

SCSIMD10

This indicates an anonymised practice code the patient is currently registered with. It is internaly generated by HIC.  .

anonPrac

This field represents the rurality code. .

SEUR6

This field represents the first 3 or 4 digits of a postcode (e.g., 'DD1' if DD1 1AB or 'DD10' if DD10 2BG).  .

postcode_district

1 if the record is still active in the given healthboard (e.g.. Tayside) or 0 if a more recent record exists in another healthboard (i.e. they are known to have moved out of the area or if ISD no longer supplies the record).    Note that if your research project only covers Tayside then you would not get a record with 1 if they moved to Glasgow but would still get the old record from Tayside with 0 for current record..

currentRecord

Instition where the patient is living (Residential home or Nursing home). Where this is present it appears to be 100% but it is not always present..

Institution

This is the date when the patient was accepted onto current GP list.  .

current_gp_accept_date

This field represents the historical status.

chi_status

This is the date when the patient address was updated on the CHI system  .

date_address_changed

The CHI Institution flag  93 and 98 are the allocated codes for residential and nursing homes which, taken together form what is known as ‘the CHI Care Home Flag’ and officially only these should be used in both Tayside and Fife.    .
