Documentation

Description:
Researchers should contact the ONS RIO project team (ons.rio.cohort.study@ons.gov.uk) to express their interest in using the data before applying to the SRS --- The RIO project links Home Office refugee data with other government administrative data to create a comprehensive dataset of refugee outcomes to inform our understanding of refugee integration. It aims to provide a robust dataset which can be analysed to provide evidence to support interventions by government and other organisations. The current RIO dataset includes records of 169,488 refugees who were granted asylum in the UK and were residing in England or Wales in the period 2015 to March 2025 and 43,509 refugees who were resettled to the UK and residing in England or Wales via Vulnerable Persons and Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement Schemes (VPRS/VCRS), UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS), or Afghan Citizen’s Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) Pathway 2 in the period 2015 to March 2025. These groups represent a subset of all refugees in England and Wales and therefore conclusions from this study should not be generalised across other refugee groups. The refugee cohorts have been linked to: • Census 2021 data • Birth and Death Registration data (2015-2024) • HMRC PAYE-RTI data covering every individual in the UK who pays income tax and national insurance through the PAYE system for the tax years 2014/15 to 2024/25 • Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) data covering those studying at higher education institutions for the academic years 2010/11 to 2022/23 The linked data allows for analysis of integration outcomes including labour market participation, language proficiency and housing and living conditions.
